Thursday April 15, 2010: Tax Day and 6 days to go!

Yesterday was my pre-op with my hematologist where my platelet count had to be 75,000or more to go without a short course of prednisone beforehand. It was, as it was 86,000. He also was calling the hospital blood bank to make sure it would have platelets on hand for me the day of the surgery in case they were needed. So we're inching forward. Joints are still aching but not much longer!

Friday April 9, 2010: Update

Monday the 5th, I had the autologous blood donation appointment at the hosptial. Platelets were at 86,000. Tuesday the 6th, I had my preop with my primary care physician. Thursday the 7th, she called to say platelets were at 93,000. Today (the 9th) was the preop with the ortho. I had an xray of my knee taken at an angle that hadn't been done. Even I could see the bone on bone arthritis. I described pain level at a 9 at times. I got a prescription for a painkiller for now. PT, it turns out, will start at home, done by the VNA. 12 days! Yea! Can't wait (mostly, lol).

Friday April 2, 2010: Crazy week. Tuesday at 4:40, I got a call from Danbury Hospital about my ortho wanting me to have an MRI of knee and thigh STAT because there is a cyst in there. Knowing nothing, the hospital person said she’d call the ortho office. No call back. It was a long night! Wednesday March 31, I call the ortho office and sure enough, yes I need one. So I call the hospital and make an appointment. Meanwhile, I realize I forgot to ask ortho person something. So I call afterwards: I need to know will my surgery be cancelled or postponed because of this? The answer is no. A lot of relief! Shortly after that, ortho surgery person (not the usual one), whom I had learned the hospital had left a voice mail with last night, called me back and confirmed everything I had been told. Then I was about to leave for work when Henry said there was a voice mail, so I listened and it was the hospital MRI department. Because the MRI was to with and without contrast and I’m on BP medicine, I had to have blood work done and it had to be done that day. So after work, I had to run over to CFO and get a prescription for the blood work and then go to the hospital lab on Sandpit Rd. I took care of that. Thursday April 2 (yesterday) in the afternoon, I took Ativan for the MRI before we left the house. Jonathan drove me. I felt fine. But when I had to lay down on the bed for the MRI, I got dizzy but it passed. The scan proceeded fine until it was time to add the contrast (near the end). I mistakenly told them to do it in my left arm but the vein blew (the contrast started coming out of the spot) – do not get injections/whatever in the same spot as where blood was drawn less than 24 hours before. But then things were okay for the rest of the scan. When it was done, I got up and promptly got very dizzy again. I sat a few times on the way back to the changing room. While changing, I got dizzy again but it passed. I finally got home exhausted. Then last night, the primary doctor called back to say my cholesterol was even higher than before. I’m making it, although I had modified my diet. Oy!!!! Oh, and I forgot to mention that the cyst is something I have had for 15+ years-never think about it, doesn't bother me.

Saturday March 20, 2010: Time for an update

My trip to the Azores was wonderful despite terrible weather. I used my folding cane only once-preventative cortisone shot seemed to do the trick. The shot's effects are gone now, but were good while they lasted!
We attended the hospital joint replacement class and met with an anesthesiologist and nurse. Bumping surgery to 2nd or 3rd of the day so a CBC can be done and a hematologist called if necessary. The next day, I saw the hematologist. I see him a week before the surgery, and if my count is less than 75,000 (it was 76,000 that day), I'll have a short course of prednisone which he thought is preferable to a platelet transfusion since the one and only time I had that, I got a fever and the shakes in the recovery room. Ah the joys of ITP and surgery!
Next thing on the agenda is tomorrow I start the iron pills in preparation for the autologous blood donation. Tuesday I go the rheumy office, Friday the PCP office for a cholesterol recheck. The following week is doctor-free and then lots of appointments after that.
March 27, next Saturday, we're going to Boston, having a small family gathering at Durgin Park. Can't wait!

Friday Feb. 26, 2010: MRI Scan Day

MRI scan for the custom implant today at the hospital. I had been very nervous last night and finally decided I would take ½ of an Ativan pill from my prescription for the trip next week. Henry didn’t break it very evenly so I took more like ¾ of the pill. It was snowing this morning so Henry drove me. The scan was about 2 hours, with a short break in the middle. Technician called me skinny (not really am) and then a troublemaker being skinny and having already an knee implant, when I mentioned it. That knee was kept away sort of from the knee being scanned. I dozed a lot through the 2nd half of the scan. We came home, had lunch, and then tried to take a nap in bed but couldn’t sleep so I came downstairs and watching curling at the Olympics while my husband was working. I managed to doze off and on with that. I woke completely when I heard my cell phone ring upstairs. I'm glad that's over with. I was told the technician would be sending the scans "on the internet" to Biomet and I was given a large envelope with the actual scans. I'm supposed to give them to my ortho the next time I see him, which isn't until April 9.
I am trying to stop wondering that someone looking at the scans will wonder why I am getting a TKR!! Nutty but true!

Wednesday Feb. 24, 2010: More progress

More progress moving toward surgery day, which is 8 weeks from today. I got a call from the hosptial confirming my MRI scan for FRiday morning, regardless of the weather (which isn't supposed to be very good). A bit nervous due to always having had open MRIs for all my other scans. This one, required for my custom implant, has to be a closed machine. I know my head will be out but I hope it's enough that I can breathe. The woman I spoke to suggested maybe an Ativan (something I never took until last week when I tried it once to see if it worked for my upcoming plane ride) but I rejected it, knowing how knocked out and for how long it knocked me out when I tried it.
Then in the mail came a letter from the hospital comfirming my joint replacement class. It mentioned scheduling an appointment with a nurse and anesthesologist prior to surgery, if desired. I thought that had been included in the class, but apparently not. So I had to call the ortho office which got me an appointment with them right after the class. With my PKR, I had told the anesthesiologist in the holding area that my hematologist said I should have general rather than spinal anesthesia due to my low platelet count. Since I don't remember anything after being given a femoral block and sedative, I don't know if I consented to the spinal during the period I have no memory of. I don't remember the OR at all. As far as I know, I ended up with a spinal anyway, so I want to get things cleared up beforehand.

Monday Feb. 22, 2010: Cortisone shot day

I got my shot in my left knee this morning in preparation for my trip. The office again was running late. That never happened before. I don't know if they're trying to get more patients in an hour or what (or their new computer system is causing problems-which is was last time). Anyway, he gave me the shot. We discussed and poked at the other knee. I described where and when that knee is hurting (going down stairs and bent when I drive mostly) and he said that is kneecap/patella issues---arthritis----and possibly in another spot where it's hard to tell because it's still numb there from the PKR (nerves haven't regenerated completely-smaller area than at first). He said when it gets troublesome, we'll check that one out. He doesn't like to go in arthroscopically to see what is going on because that in itself can stir up problems. It is feeling better. I am no longer having the muscle cramps since I seem to have figured out what motions trigger them (although when they first started 10 or so days ago, they'd just cramp up for some reason) so I avoid those motions. I don't see him again until my pre-op in April so he told me to have a nice trip:)
So Friday I have the MRI for the implant scan---closed machine but my head will be sticking out. And they have it in their records (noted when I made the appointment) that I am slightly claustrophobic so they're prepared if there is a problem.

Friday Feb. 19, 2010: And so it goes

Time for a short update. We decided earlier this week to go tomorrow to Mohegan Sun (Indian casino here in CT) for the day. We're going to leave early, play the nickel and quarter slots, and have a big lunch. Looking forward to getting away for the day.

NExt week I'm scheduled to work on Tuesday 11-3. Of course, it's supposed to snow again that day so I'll probably end up calling out. Then I'm on vacation for 2 weeks going to and from the Azores and getting back into the time zone. Then I work until my medical leave starts which is April 18, but the scheduler will probably make my last day early in the week than the 17th.

LEft knee (the one soon to be operated on) hasn't been horrible, but hasn't been comfortable either. For the most part, the cramping is mostly gone unless I get up wrong from a chair or go down the stairs wrong. But I have definitely concluded that I now have arthritis under my kneecap in my PKR knee that occasionally will really let itself be known. I'm going to the ortho on Monday for my pre-trip cortisone shot and he's going to be checking my PKR knee too (he doesn't seem to be as much a stickler about checking out other body parts than what the appointment is for as my 1st ortho is!). If I'm lucky, he may suggest a cortisone shot in that knee too. Then Friday I have the MRI for the scan of my knee for the TKR implant.

Once back from the Azores, I have a ton of appointments, from several pre-ops to an appointment for the autologous blood donation to a cholesterol retest appointment to hemo to rheumy office. And also my Joint Replacement class will be coming up too, a week after I get back.

Busy weeks ahead! So it'll be fun to get away to Mohegan Sun tomorrow. Extra nice if we manage to win something!

Wednesday Feb 10, 2010: Oh my! Pain!

Snowing here (southwestern CT) like crazy. I walked down 6 stairs this AM and my already replaced knee hurt so badly at the bottom of them, I had to stand there a few minutes. I finally hobbled to the sofa nearby and rubbed which helped for a bit. Now it's awful again. I can barely put any weight on it or bend it without a lot of pain. If it's still this way tomorrow, I'll call the ortho. Mine does surgery on Wednesday so he wouldn't be there today even if I called (and even if the ortho office is opened--=a lot of places are either closed or are closing early). I've also iced it. It hurts right where the implant is. I have a bruise there (which I've had a few days, from walking into the corner of the dishwasher). Maybe it's the tendon. I don't know but it hurts A LOT!

Feb,. 9, 2010: Blood donation date & surgery approved

I arranged yesterday for a date for the autologous blood donation but wrote down one date in my notebook and another date on the calendar so I had to call this morning to get that cleared up as to the correct date! So it's Monday April 5, the day before my pre-op with my regular doctor.
This morning, the surgery scheduler from the ortho office called while HEnry was on the phone and so I had to call her back and then wait for the return call. She said surgery was approved by insurance and that she had gotten a notice saying I had scheduled the MRI date. So as of now, this is what my schedule looks like (it includes yesterday's appointment):

Sunday Feb. 7, 2010: A long weekend

This weekend seemed very long. It was supposed to snow late late Friday night into Saturday but it didn't. However, south of here, there was a WHOLE lot more snow.
Thursday I started feeling sniffy and by Friday afternoon, I had a full-blown cold. No fever, just lots of nose blowing and sneezes. And then my PKR leg decided to return to the cramping it had after the PKR: the calf, hamstring and right behind the knee would clamp down tight. It is still doing it, but not doing it quite as much. On a good note about, it seems to take away from the left knee waiting for its TKR, which still hurts, but not as noticeably when I'm trying to ignore the cramping pain! Hopefully that will ease up. Today I'm still blowing my nose but have only sneezed about 4 times, and that wasn't until around 8PM and in one big sneezing attack.

So tomorrow morning, I have to take the Subaru in to get the license plates put on since the dealer neglected to give us screws for the front license plate required in CT. I'll go there before I had to Ridgefield to get my airplane drugs for my trip. She’ll probably check me out due to the cold and I'll tell her about the upcoming TKR. I'm also bringing the paper that has the information about the autologous blood donation and iron recommendations to see what she says about that. Hopefully tomorrow the hematology office will call back, speaking of the blood donation. I'll probably make the appointment for the donation tomorrow too, for the day of the joint replacement class, which the paper says they like to do.

Tuesday Feb. 2, 2010: Another entry-MRI scan & more

I got the call today for scheduling the MRI scan which will scan my knee for measurements for the new custom knee. It'll be Friday Feb. 26 in the morning. It isn't, as I thought correctly, an open machine but my head will be sticking out and there is a note saying I am slightly claustrophobic.

I also got the packet of papers from the ortho office. Good thing I got them as I had the pre-op date with the ortho one week later than it's scheduled.

Tuesday Feb. 2, 2010: A Cane

Just a quick note to say I ordered a cane today. After calling the local medical supply store to see if they carried folding canes (they do not), I ordered one online that I think will look nice. I may end up taking it to the Azores since it folds and is adjustible (no more men walking by me and whispering "your cane's too big," which happened at the grocery store after my PKR) for my height. Friday Jan. 29, 2010: A surgery date is set

The surgery scheduler called me this morning. We have a date of April 21 (a Wednesday), first thing in the morning. I'll be seeing other doctors in the practice for 2 days afterwards (while in the hospital) as he'll be away, but I can live with that. I am also registered for the mandatory (apparently not mandatory for the PKR) joint replacement class at the hospital on March 16 where you also get to meet the anesthesia team (individually). A pre-surgical blood donation for myself from me will also be done, as long as my hemo says it's fine (which I can't see why not). I'll be seeing him mid-March and will discuss the whole thing then, including required platelet count for the surgery. I now also have a pre-op appointment set up with my regular doctor and one with the ortho. Then this afternoon, as I was walking into Sear's, I got another call from her on my cell phone. I have to have a special MRI ASAP at the hospital as the ortho uses a customized implant.

Tuesday Jan. 26, 2010: Big News!

I saw my ortho today for a one year check up on the PKR right knee and had a chance to discuss my ever-worsening left knee. He poked, looked at the xray of the left knee, discussed the pain, where it is, how much it hurts, and he said whenever I'm ready, I should call the surgery scheduler to schedule a total knee replacement. The pain isn't all in one place as it was with the other knee, it's much more diffused across the whole knee, which is why he said it is better to have the one surgery and replace it all rather than having the partial knee replacement and needing another surgery in a couple of years. So I cancelled the appointment I made to see him next week about that knee and have instead an appointment to see him about a week before I go to the Azores when he'll give me a cortisone shot in that knee to get through the trip. He said they're already almost booked for MArch for surgeries,and I don't want to do it in March anyway, but I'm thinking toward the end of April or the beginning of May.

Jan. 21, 2010: Happy Birthday Demian and I bit the bullet

First, happy birthday to my nephew. It's hard to believe he's 39!

Second, this morning, I went to the mall (Macy's) to shop for my upcoming trip to the Azores. Not a particular successful one, but it was much easier to try clothes wearing my new clog-style (slip on, no-laces) Merrell shoes. Henry also wanted me to look for a new key ring for him while I was there, so I headed out to the rest of the mall (Macy's is at the very end of one side). I could barely walk, my left knee (the non-replaced one) was hurting so much, I didn't even bother to go more than 1/2 down the length of the mall (it's New England's biggest mall so it's pretty big). It was then I decided I had to bite the bullet and act proactively. I have an appointment on Tuesday to see the ortho for a year check up on the replaced knee. I am pretty sure he doesn't/won't discuss my other knee at the same appointment, so I made myself an appointment to see him about the other knee the following week, as he's all booked up for next week. If he's willing to discuss that knee on Tuesday, then I'll cancel the other appointment. But at least for now, I have one. And if he agrees it's time for the TKR, I'd like to do it in late April or May. What a pain it is!!!

Knees are continuing to ache as are feet again, which I think I related to walking funny because the knees ache. Who knows??
Big happenings going on since I last posted. We will be picking up the Subaru Forester on Saturday morning. The Jeep has been cleaned out, 10 years worth of emission test result papers thrown out, about 6 years of expired car insurance ID cards from AMICA, some pens, a 2006 phone book, a CD of unknown origin, all gone to the trash. Unfortunately, no money was found.
On another front, I am unexpectedly going to a small family reunion in The Azores in March! A little concerned for my knees but they'll live. Now if I could just not think about the plane part of the trip!

Saturday January 9, 2010: My Pain Will Go On!

A quick update. Left knee has been deteriorating. Buckling, pain when turning/twisting. Not a happy camper. New partially replaced knee has also been hurting but may be because of compensating for its sister knee. It’s not happy going to work with me. I am a bit concerned because the PKR'd knee is hurting where the replacement isn't at time (but also where the replacement is) so who knows. I'm just glad to be seeing the ortho. in a couple of weeks.

However, that hasn’t stopped us from putting a deposit on a new car today which we’ll pick up next Saturday probably. It’s a Subaru Forester:

Tuesday Dec. 29, 2009: Now my left knee

I worked yesterday, walking a lot, moving around a lot as everything was a mess there and only got worse. Not a good day for my left knee, which already has had issues (as well as shots). It gave out a couple of times and hurt a lot when I moved it, including when I was helping a customer return some lacy, practically see-through leggings. I had to stop and regroup after it happened and she kept right on talking about needing the leggings in an XL. This woman was older than I am. ANyway, once I got home and had dinner, I iced it with my old friend, Mr. Bag of Pies. I'm glad I'm not working again this week. I've yet to get my schedule for next week so I may have some more time off.I realized last night that the cortisone shot I had in that knee at the end of September or beginning of October has run out and my knee is worse than it had been prior to it. I can really feel the grinding, rubbing the bones against each other in there now. Shoot! Good thing I'll be seeing the replacement ortho. in January.

Saturday Dec. 19, 2009: RIP Jack

Jack the cat went steadily downhill over the last few days, finding it increasingly difficult for him to breath. We took him to the vet this morning and now he's buried in the woods with Shadow and Princess Debbie in the woods behind the house.

I had planned to call out today from work when I knew kids would be here for the weekend, but with an upcoming snow storm, I'm extra glad I was planning not to be there. On top of this, as I went downstairs yesterday evening, I ended up having to jump down the last couple of stairs and now my replaced knee hurts. So that's what I used as my reason for not working today. I'm scheduled to work 6:45AM - 2:45PM tomorrow and hopefully will get in there, although I have a feeling the store won't be opening that early.

Saturday Dec. 5, 2009: H1N1 vaccinations & short knee update

Having seen a small article in the newspaper last weekend about the Danbury VNA opening up the H1N1 vaccination up to more people, I called on Monday to see if HEnry and I qualified now. Someone from my ITP group had said "blood disorder" was included in a form she saw for it. And indeed, it did. I was accepted immediately. The woman on the phone had to check about Henry as a cancer survivor. He was okayed so we got an appointment for both of us. It was painless but by afternoon, my/our arms were a bit sore. But nothing else.
As far as the knee goes, I haven't noticed much of a difference after having the 5 Supartz shots. The shots didn't hurt as much this time. My knee doesn't feel wonderfully better but it doesn't feel worse either. So who knows.....Going back for a follow up for the shots on Dec. 22, the same day as a dental cleaning in the morning and an energy audit of our house in the afternoon. Busy day!

Thursday, Nov. 26, 2009: Turkey Day and last Supartz

Tuesday I had my last Supartz shot. I had a problem with the bandaid coming loose which had to be fixed before I left the office. All's well that ends well. I go back Dec. 22 for a 4 week follow up.
Wednesday morning was grocery shopping for Thanksgiving. I had a fender bender in the Trader JOe's parking lot:( Car will be getting an estimate tomorrow after I work 4:45AM -11AM!!!!
Thursday (today) we cooked and ate a lot. RIght knee hurt this evening so I iced it which helped a bit. It is kind of stiff-that's the problem. I rode the exercise bike in hopes it would loosen it up but it did only minimally. So I iced it.
Off to watch some TV, play a bit and go to bed early since I have to be up before 4AM!

Friday Nov. 20, 2009: #4 Supartz shot

Almost done with the shots! I had #4 this past Tuesday (Nov. 17). One to go. Can't tell if they did anything. My knee doesn't feel worse and the shots aren't nearly as painful in this knee as they were in my other knee, so maybe there is hope that they'll help.
I also had a hematologist appointment on Wednesday (Nov. 18). My count was 72,000. Nothing new. The big news was that I got in and out of there by 9:30, which was the time my appointment was scheduled to start! That was a big change although it probably won't happen again!

Thursday Nov. 12, 2009: 3rd shot on Tuesday

I had my 3rd Supartz shot on Tuesday. Nothing very exciting. It was the PA who did it. She thought I'd be still on a Wednesday schedule this week which is why she told me she wouldn't be there to do the shot. My next shot will be Tuesday and I see the hematologist on Wednesday. When I requested those 2 days off, I had no idea they would be the days for a very big sale at work and I missing it. Oh well!
Yesterday at work, there was a customer who had to stop several times because of knee pain and she said she had knee replacement. She and I chatted briefly. Then another customer asked me about mine and was I happy with it (among the questions she asked).

Right replaced knee has been a little stiff the last couple of days. I really must get myself back in the saddle again, I mean the exercise bike. Hip has also been achy. I think it's the cloudy weather, with some expected rain in the forecast for later this week. I also have figured out that my shoulders do not like being cold, which they are in this room where I am. So I am sitting here with a blanket over my shoulders.

Thursday Nov. 5, 2009: I learn something new about my knee

I forgot to write yesterday. I had my 2nd Supartz shot. I also brought along with me the xrays the ortho. wanted me to show whomever at the rheumatology office. The PA looked at the one which has both knees in it and said that my left (non-replaced) knee is wearing down evenly and when I need a replacement, I won't be able to have a unicomparmental as I did with the right knee. She said I'll need a TKR. She also said my left knee cap was very loose, noticing this while getting ready to do the shot. No bruise from the shot today so I guess my platelet count must be decent! I'll be finding that out in a couple of weeks. She also said the doctor will be doing the next shot next week because she'll be off that day.

Thursday Oct. 29, 2009: The appointment

I'm home. The answer is he doesn't think I'm ready for the surgery, which he thought was funny since it's his job to operate on people. He said in the stages of arthritis, between 0-10, at this point, I am only at a 1, despite pain. He said to keep moving, walking, gentle exercises. He also is worried that given my relatively young age for such a procedure, the odds are it will wear out sooner rather than later. BUt he also said I don't want to be too old either because you will often end up with other medical problems (which is what happened with my mother). He also is not completely sold on the hip resurfacing process itself---he compared it (or after what he said, I compared it to) not buying a new model car in the first year it is out. So for now, I will do what he says.
Oh--more cool thing. We were talking about the rheumatology office and he wanted me to take with me a couple of xrays of my new knee to show the rheumatologist. So I will next week. Meanwhile, I'm going to see if I can scan the xrays because they're really cool to look at!
Edited to say I got the xray scanned. Not perfect but you can see the implant!

Back from my knee shot that really wasn't too bad except for the first seconds of it. I think it wasn't so bad because the knee isn't quite in as bad condition as the other knee was when I last had them. I did discuss with her about the hip and she said that although the cartilage is half gone, it could be gone in the area which gets affected by doing things, and she thought it was a good idea to be seeing someone about it. And she said that the ortho I'm seeing (my knee replacement one) tomorrow morning is the hip guy (although she said the other doctor is good too, lol, covering herself) and this would be for hip resurfacing. I told her I'd tell her next week what was discussed. So now I'm on my bed with a bag of peas on my knee, but it really doesn't feel too bad. But I am supposed to take it easy so I will.

Hmm, the font seems to have changed! Oh well. Anyway, early this afternoon, I called the ortho office and made an appointment to see Dr. S, my knee replacement ortho., for what is being called a "surgical consultation" for my left hip. I'm hoping he will agree that I am a candidate for hip resurfacing as the ortho I saw in the summer thought I was. I am supposed to bring the disk with my MRI scan pictures as apparently those don't get kept in my record, only the report does. So that does it!

Sunday, Oct. 25, 2009: Supartz

Three more days until my Supartz shots. I've been having more thoughts that they probably won't help but I might as well as try. With a bad rain storm yesterday (and working all day, 4 hours the day before, and 4 hours the day before that), my joints weren't happy, especially my hips. Not sleeping particulatly well.
In the meantime, I am planning a Pampered Chef party at my house (and online). Hoping to get some orders!
And I worked all day yesterday and wasn't scheduled to work again until Thursday (after reminding HR I wasn't available Wednesday). However, yesterday, while I was working, the manager of a department called to asked if I could work on Monday or Tuesday after I said I couldn't come in on Wednesday. So I agreed to 5 hours Tuesday.
Jack the cat is still surviving. The prednisone ordered by the vet almost 2 weeks ago after he wasn't eating and seemed lethargic has seemed to up his appetite. But he is still obviously not well and we're really not sure how long he will last. We're keeping up his quality of life and if that goes south, we'll take him to the vet:(

And our poor cat Jack (who is pictured to the side, 10 years ago, about twice the weight he is now) is doing poorly. I had to take him to the vet today. The last week, his appetite, which has always been big, dwindled to practically nothing. So he's now, temporarily, on prednisone to increase his appetite, in addition to his thyroid medication (which I know now to get at the Costco pharmacy) The vet thought she felt some irregularity along his abdominal wall and thought his kidneys felt smaller than they should be. Since, even if it is some kind of cancer, we are not treating him and are instead concentrating on his quality of life. So we shall see how it goes...

Monday October 5, 2009: Supartz shots okayed!

Technically insurance wasn't required but the company did tell the nurse from the rheumy office that it would be covered 80% until I get to my out of pocket max (I am about $135 from there) and then they'll be covered 100%. So for now, I am set. I have appointments made already for the 1st, 2nd and 4th shots (the 4th one was an appointment I had made in August for a check in there) and will make the other appointments the next time I'm there, which will be on Oct. 28 for the first shot.
I also saw my primary care doctor today, having a BP recheck again to see if the new pills were working okay. I told her about the hip MRI results and she wanted to know if I was going to do anything about the problem yet (other than the hip cortisone shot I already had) and I told her at this point, I wasn't, but I was pretty sure something will be done in the future, mentioning the hip resurfacing possibility.

Rheumy appointment today. I got a cortisone shot in my left knee and made plans to get Supartz shots in it as well, to be started in a month. I also found out the results of my hip MRI (never got the details from the ortho). I have mild arthritis in my right hip and mild to moderate (probably closer to moderate) in the left one (the one that was bothering me) has 50% of the cartilage gone, with a defect in the cartilage. Not so great news but manageable at this point still.

My sister Susan made me a handmade quilt for my birthday from fabric my friend Lenita and I chose here and that then son Andy and girlfriend Kira brought to her in the Azores in June. The quilt arrived on Friday and we got it installed in its new home in my office today. This has nothing to do with orthopedic problems but I wanted to post it anyway in the unlikely event someone actually is reading this blog and can admire it too:)
On an orthopedic note, I made an appointment to see the rheumy PA on this Thursday, hopefully to discuss something for my left (non-replaced) knee. I'm leaving work 30 minutes early (with permission) to get there on time.

Thursday Sept. 24, 2009: The other knee

My non-replaced knee has been acting up. I am getting the same pouffy spot on that knee that I used to get on my replaced knee. The medial bottom corner is aching off and on and the whole knee doesn't feel so great lately. So today, after Henry told me that if I want to get anything done to the knee, to get it done before the end of the year while we have reached our out-of-pocket max. It obviously is not at the point of needing any kind of replacement but is in need of some kind of medical intervention. I am thinking either a cortisone or maybe even a round of Supartz. I would hope that the latter might work this time because the knee isn't as bad as it could be. So I made an appointment for a week from today with the rheumy PA to discuss what to do. I'll be leaving work early (with permission) and might be able to run home first to change clothes before heading over there. We shall see.

Thursday Sept. 17, 2009:The 1st Anniversary of my Partial Knee Replacement

Today marks the 1st birthday of my Oxford partial knee implant. I spent the day working---8 hours on my feet, something I certainly couldn't do a year ago===and for many months prior to my PKR. Although 95% of the time it feels fine, occasionally I do get twinges but for the most part, I can't even describe how much better my knee feels. Unfortunately, my other knee and my left hip now have their pains, but at least my other knee feels really so much better, I can't even describe it!

I never did have doubts about having a PKR before the actual surgery, but if I had, they would be dispelled by now. If I ever need replacement of the aforementioned other knee and hip, I would do it again---even though there was a lot of work involved in getting it to the point where I am now, but all totally worth it.

I'll be spending tomorrow at the Big E, a very large fair which requires a lot of walking. It was something I said last year at this time that I would want to do the next year and I am. So Mission: Accomplished (unlike other things that have been declared accomplished, lol).

I meant to take a picture of my knee today but didn't get a chance to. Maybe tomorrow! In the meantime, if you're someone reading this who is thinking about having a PKR, if your situation is one that you are at the point of thinking about having one, if I were you, I'd go for it. I spent quite a few months in terrible pain pre-surgery and I can't imagine spending the rest of my life living that way.

I haven't updated for a while. I took the Lisinopril but it made me cough without having a cold. I finally went to the doctor's yesterday and have changed medicines to Hydrochlorothiazide (I hope I spelled that right), 25 mg.. While there, I got my flu shot too.
In a couple of days, it will be the first birthday of my partial knee replacement. I'll discuss then how things have gone in that year. I probably won't get to it until the evening because I'm working all day.

I realized I forgot to post an update on my Tuesday rheumy appointment. Nothing very exciting. She was surprised to hear about the hip. She got the report on the hip cortisone shot but not the MRI report that went with it so Tuesday afternoon, I called the ortho office to have them fax it over to the rheumy office. She told me to take the Darvocet if my hip hurts so much that Tylenol doesn't help. Since it makes me feel odd, I'll have to save it for bedtime. She also told me when I mentioned that the ortho mentioned Supartz into the hip that it is really only done at the Hospital for Special Surgery in NYC. Although off-label, they can get it approved there by insurance companies. And she said that shoulder shots are now on label, insurance is reluctant to pay for them.

Yesterday I drove up to Kent to see my friend Laura there and managed to leave/drop my MedicAlert bracelet somewhere between there and home. I did odds and ends when I got home and then discovered that it was missing. Fortunately this morning, she sent me an email saying she had found it and will be sending it to me.

Feeling a bit sniffly today. I hope it goes away. I am wearing my sneakers today and it seems to be okay (so far).

I went back to my PCP today for a follow up on my BP. She liked the document I made. Readings were half good, half bad (lower number was over 80 half the time----it should be less than 80) so she said we should try drugs. So I got a prescription for lisonopril, 10 MG. I may have misspelled that. But at least it is one of the 90 pills for $9.99 from Stop and Shop. Henry takes it as well, but in a larger dose. She may reduce the dose for me to 5 if necessary. I guess I have to say good bye to Sudafed! Oh well. I also got a refill for the antibotics I have to take prior to any dentist appointments for the rest of my life!
Tomorrow I go to the rheumy office in the morning and the dentist in the afternoon. Sure sounds like a swell day..... not!

4 days away from Connecticut was lovely. This is the first vacation in 2 years where part of it hasn't been spent by either my husband or me recuperating from some kind of surgery. My bruise is looking much better but my ankle and foot have gotten swollen as the bruise has move down my leg. This evening, after I spent 2.5 hours with my leg elevated while watching TV, I discovered that, as predicted by both doctors who say it, it has started to reach my toes. The picture with this post was taken before the bruise got there. My ankles (both) are kind of sore too from all the walking on sand that we did. Thank goodness I brought my Crocs because my sneakers weren't comfortable due to the swelling in the right foot.

Friday August 7, 2009: Platelet count results

Yesterday I forgot to post that I got the results of Monday's platelet count at my regular doctor's office. It was 95,000, low for normal people, fine for me. Not horribly low but within my usual range. My potassium level was also normal. The calf really hurt last night and this morning, feeling like the muscle was stuck in a contracture (or whatever the noun actually is). But this morning, I took a hot bath which loosened things enough to be able to go to Costco and Stop and Shop and get things in preparation for our trip on Monday. And when I was home, I spent that night, for the most part, with my leg propped up, elevated. The picture posted is from yesterday. Today it looks slightly better but I didn't take a picture of it today. Maybe tomorrow!

Wednesday August 5, 2009: Ortho visit for the hip

I had my follow up appointment with the ortho today for my hip shot. The hip is looking good. He was very happy the shot worked. No renewal of PT prescription=just finish one of the two more sessions scheduled as PT guy has to close out my case. He mentioned hip resurfacing if necessary, if it really starts bothering me but doesn't need a total hip replacement. It replaces part of the joint, not the full thing, He warned me the huge bruise could spread to my toes (it's almost there already). Now supposedly, I don't need to go back to the ortho office (except for the PT in the same building tomorrow) until January. I hope that actually happens!

As far as the hip resurfacing goes, it sounds good to me, although, obviously, I hope it doesn't become necessary. It can be done when your hip need something but it's not so bad that it needs a total replacement, and it leaves things in tact so that if you do need a hip replacement down the line, it can be done. Sort of like my partial knee replacement which can, when necessary, be made into a total knee replacement. It's also minimally invasive, like the PKR versus the TKR.

Monday Aug. 3, 2009: The bruise

I called the regular doctor's office this morning and got myself an appointment for the afternoon. PT people were shocked at the bruise! I remembered to tell them I have my appointment on Wednesday with the ortho.. Meanwhile, this afternoon, primary doctor was surprised at the size of the bruise. Agreed stopping Mobic was a good idea (for now at least). Blood was drawn for a platelet count and a potassium check (because of the tightening muscle). BP was really high there-higher than I ever have seen it, 162 over something. So she said before prescribing medicine for that (it had been high usually for the last 1.5 years), I should get a home BP monitor and take readings 3 a day for 3 weeks and then bring it to look at. I thought we already had one but when I got home, Henry said it was not working so I had to get another. I've taken my BP now twice, once at 4:30: 121/76 and then at 8PM after running down 5-6 stairs from up here in my office to downstairs in the living room, and it was 123/78. That's a whole lot lower than at the doctor's! I go back on August 24 with the monitor.

Sunday Aug. 2: Blah

I worked for 4 hours for the most part without a problem. My calf muscle did tighten up once. When I got home, however, I discovered my right ankle is swollen. I've iced it and elevated the leg. It looks like the bruise is moving down that way. I'm planning to call my regular doctor tomorrow morning to see if I can get an appointment for the afternoon as I'm planning (also) to go to PT in the morning. It's the last one before I see the ortho on Wednesday morning. Since I have only 1 small bruise (on my arm where the door hit me on the way through it), I don't think my platelet count is the problem. To be on the safe (but uncomfortable side), I didn't take my Mobic/Meloxicam tonight.

Friday July 31, 2009 Update on the shot and a calf issue

It's now been 9 days since the cortisone shot in my hip and I would say that it worked. There is still an occasional twinge but nothing like before. I am getting backaches if I lean over too much (it happened at work last Sunday and earlier this week when I washed the cars) but maybe it won't happen now that more time has passed. I am working tomorrow and Sunday and then won't be working for a couple of weeks since we're going away on vacation!

Meanwhile, however, during PT this Wednesday, my right calf has tightened up terribly. The PT guy rubbed it and massaged it while I was there which helped slightly. But yesterday it was REALLY tight all day, and occaisonally the small area on the lateral side of my right knee, on top, was tightening too and looked a little swollen. Last night I took a Flexeril and a bath before bed so my calf would loosen up. I woke up and it was slightly looser than it had been. Today, I didn't have usual PT guy but a PT woman instead who checked things out and had me stretch the calves (both) on an incline gadget. That really stretched it but it is still sore. There is a good size bruise there too from rubbing it so much! But at least the knee spot isn't so bad today. Hopefully I'll make it through the 4 hours of work tomorrow and the 4 hours of work Sunday.

Next week brings PT on Monday, a follow up on the shot with Dr. Rogell on Wednesday, and PT Thursday and Friday, which should be the end of it. I don’t think I’ll need any more as the hip feels much better----and if I continue to do more of the exercises!

Wednesday July 22, 2009: The Hip Cortisone Shot

It wasn't too bad, although not exactly pleasant. I was led into a room that reminded me of an operating room----and to think the last operating room I was in, I don't even remember---. The doctor, a Dr. Sherman, came in and introduced himself and briefly discussed the procedure as did an assistant. I did remember to ask about how long to wait for PT and the answer was 24 hours-and to take it easy for them. I didn't have to change---just had to move the sweat pants and undies (nothing like being discreet) down to my thighs once I was covered by a blanket. I could see my hip on a monitor. They put in some kind of dye to be able to see things clearly. Betadine was swabbed on the area too and then some numbing agent. The shot itself was very quick and not particularly painful at all. I didn't watch the monitor while the shot was being administered. So that's all done. Reports will be sent to Dr. Rogell, Dr. Miller, and Dr. Maki.
And I could take my Mobic again with dinner. Halleleujah!
Now I just have to wait for the cortisone to kick in and the Mobic (Meloxicam) to kick in.

Today would've been my father's 90th birthday. Hard to imagine him that old since he died shortly after his 73rd birthday.
Tomorrow is the xray guided cortisone shot. Since I can drive myself home, I guess it won’t be terrible! I had PT yesterday and today, today making up for the appointment I managed to miss on Friday. While getting the shot tomorrow, I have to find out how long I have to wait before having PT again. With this information, I'll call the PT place tomorrow afternoon and make more appointments. Next week I'm working SUnday and the following Saturday so they should be easy to schedule.

2nd PT session with the correct PT guy. Did a bunch of exercises with a ball as well as having some e-stimulation, which according to Web MD:
Electrical stimulation, including transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TENS), implanted electric nerve stimulation, and deep brain or spinal cord stimulation, is the modern-day extension of age-old practices in which the nerves of muscles are subjected to a variety of stimuli, including heat or massage. Electrical stimulation, no matter what form, involves a major surgical procedure and is not for everyone, nor is it 100 percent effective.

I also got kinesio tape, like the beach volleyball players used last summer at the Olympics.

Kinesio Taping gives support and stability to your joints and muscles without affecting circulation and range of motion. It is also used for Preventive Maintenance, Edema, and Pain Management.

Hoping I won't have a reaction to the adhesive on it but I was told it's Japanese and may use a different adhesive than American ones. It can be on for 1-2 days and you can shower with it on.

Tuesday July 14, 2009: Hip PT starts

Happy Bastille Day! I had my PT evaluation today, and it turns out it was with my previous PT guy, but that was only for today. Lots of muscle tightness, which the PT will loosen up and I will be doing some strengthening exercises too. I was also given a set of exercises to do 3 times a day (in addition to the 1X [at least] a day exercises I do for my new knee. Appointments have been made for Thursday and then Monday of next week. The cortisone shot at the hospital has now been scheduled for that Wednesday (no Mobic for at least 5 days prior!!!!) and will make more PT appointments once I find out from the doctor who does the shot how long I have to wait before starting PT again. When in the parking lot, I called Henry to say I was on my way home and he told me CFO called to say I needed a follow up appointment with Dr. Rogell so I went back into the building and made that appointment for August sometime (before our vacation). PT guy also said my new knee is looking good and acting well!

Thursday July 9, 2009: The verdict is in!

The verdict is in. It is hip arthritis, wear and tear. I will be having 4 weeks of PT 3X a week, with the evaluation next Tuesday at my usual PT place, but not with the PT guy had the last time, but the guy who was becoming the new boss/head when I was there in the fall. I also have to wait for the hospital to call to schedule a cortisone shot injection. With hip cortisone shots, it has to be x-ray guided so it has to be done at the hospital! Hopefully they won’t take forever to call to schedule it. Not surprised this was the finding, but am surprised about the PT which I’m sure will be helpful, just time consuming!

Monday July 6, 2009: MRI day

Firstly, happy birthday to my nephew Oliver.
I called at 9AM the phone number I was given on Thursday for the MRI place and discovered it wasn't my usual place. However, they had an opening at 1:30, so I made the appointment and then made an appointment at the ortho's for Thursday afternoon to get results. The MRI place, in Brewster, is actually in a shopping center next to a UPS store! Not the same amenities as my usual place-no music, no stars to stare at during the scan, but the scan was done. It was the most uncomfortable MRI I ever had. No contrast, but in order to get the hips in the right position, my feet had to strapped together in a pigeon-toed position for the entire scan. Not fun, but when I had the xrays at the ortho's last week, my feet had to be in that same position so I guess it was necessary. Also my lower back hurt and the hip bursitis area wasn't comfortable either. I was given the CD with the scans on it and the report will be sent to the ortho office by Thursday.
Then this evening, I managed to slip on the bathroom floor but didn't land on the new part of the knee, only the thigh and the area right under the knee cap. I've iced it and hopefully will not have a future problem because of it!
More on Thursday after my ortho appointment (which isn't until 3PM).

A new month, a new orthopedic problem. Since we were in Boston on June 12-13, my hip has ached a lot, enough to the point that has woken me up and kept me awake. Yesterday I finally gave into the pain and called the ortho office. Dr. Schweitzer is on vacation and wouldn't be available until late next week for appointments. I could get an appointment with another one of the orthos there (after telling the scheduler what the problem is) and got an appointment for this morning. So I went. Xrays were taken immediately (the reason why I chose to go to the ortho office rather than the rheumy office). The doctor came in with them. They show there is something going on in the left hip (ha, just typed knee first--probably after years of typing problems with the knee, lol) but he can't tell without an MRI if it's arthritis in the hip or a labral tear there or both. So one is in the process of being scheduled. He could tell I have hip bursitis but at least my ITB is okay. If the MRI shows arthritis, then I can have a shot of cortisone. He also mentioned a round of Synvisc, which is a off-label use of it. I said I'd only do that if insurance okays and pays for it since I'm sure its cost is similar to Supartz (which was about $400 a pop, including fees for the administration of the shots). If there is a tear, then arthroscopic surgery is done to clean up the debris. He did say I have excellent flexibility (something I've been told by a lot of people) and my bones on the xray look good and strong.
So hopefully tomorrow I'll get a call about the MRI schedule. I'm hoping to have it early next week. After I get the appointment made, I have to call the ortho office to make my follow up (results) appointment.
I would like to thank my parents for inheriting the bad knees gene (thank you, Dad) and the bad shoulders and hips gene (thank you, Mom)!

Nothing horrible or earth-shattering. Continuing mild arthritis in my shoulder with a few small labral tears which can happen with aging and arthritis. I have to start the shoulder exercises regularly (in addition to all the knee ones) and go back in August.

One more day to go to get the results of the shoulder MRI. I should know by this time tomorrow. Good news or bad news. COnsidering I wasn't called a few days afterward by the rheumy office (which is what happened back in Sept. 07 when an MRI scan showed 2 meniscus tears), I have my hopes up that it isn't anything more than a diagnosis of advancing arthritis, although it could also be a huge bone spur poking at my bicep tendon which is why it has gotten tendinitis several times. We'll see!
Meanwhile we attended a lovely wedding on Friday afternoon. I did wear heels for about 2 hours, after which I switched to my sneakers which I had in my purse. My ankles are feeling better but a couple of times a day at least, I've felt this kind of shocky electric feeling there, especially if I put my foot down wrong and my arch gets hit in the wrong spot. I see Dr. Gray on Friday afternoon and will mention it.
Twice in the last couple of weeks, I managed to jar my right leg, making the whole thing, the new knee and everything else. Youch. Left knee had some sharp pains last night. Surprise surprise (not). And my left hip has been aching since we got back from Boston. Urgh!
Meanwhile I got my itemized hospital bill which to me confirms that I had spinal anesthesia for my partial knee replacement, even though I had said I didn't want. I keep thinking perhaps I agreed to it when I was in LaLa Land and don't remember anything. Who knows! Wednesday marks 9 months, which is hard to believe. I'll be back tomorrow with the results of the scan.

Monday June 1, 2009: Shoulder MRI

I had the scan this morning. My head was in between 2 round things so I was the sandwich in a hamburger roll! But I could look out and see the wall where they had clouds painted. I used a spot on them as a focal point. And I managed to doze off. At one point, I remember waking up and moving my leg. At the end of the scan, the technician told me she did do one rescan because I moved, but apparently more than just my leg! I'm glad she didn't tell me while doing it that she was going to need to rescan something again! No headphones for the MRI room. It's through a speaker system. In the web site below (the practice's site), I had it in the middle picture labeled Open MRI but my head was where the person in the picture's feet are and my feet were where her head is. The bottom picture is of the extremity MRI which I've used for a knee and an ankle.

The disk with the scan will be delivered to the rheumy office. I don't need to pick it up so I won't get a sneak peak of the report. Hopefully, the rheumy PA will call me if there is something significant found on the scan, so I don't have to wait until June 16, which is when my next appointment is with her.

Saturday May 30, 2009: MRI is scheduled

When I got home from work on Thursday the 28th, Henry told me that Arthritis Associates called to say I didn’t need pre-approval for the MRI and I should call Northeast Radiology for an appointment. So I called and have an appointment for Monday June 1 at 11AM. I was offered appointments for Friday or Saturday but each happened to fall in the 4-hour period I was scheduled to work on those days so I took the Monday appointment. I got a reminder call on Friday afternoon before work. I need to be there between 10:30 and 10:45 for paper work. The appointment, btw, is for an open machine in the Brewster office, which is very convenient to home. Hoping to have to pick up the disk before my appointment so I’ll get to see (possibly) the report before my June 16 appointment, although if there is something bad (like some kind of tear-which I doubt), I’ll get a call before that.

And my new knee has been doing very well this week, with all the hours I've worked, including several days in a row. I'm working tomorrow for 6 hours and then I'm off until Thursday.

On my Google alerts for knee replacement earlier this week, there was a link to an article that was mangled by a web site. I contacted the writer who liked my silly knee pictures. I think it's the funniest thing (only because of the manging) I've ever read about knee issues. I'm home from my appointment. Other knee wasn't touched, but discussed briefly. We discussed the posterior tibial tendinitis. SHe poked my shoulder and determined it is mostly the bicep tendon again which is causing the most pain. So I got a shot in the tendon (done anteriorally) and I found out it's Kenalog in the shot, with Marcane (sorry if I'm misspelling those). We also discussed the fact that I've had numerous issues with the shoulder (right) and haven't had an MRI of it in at least 4 years so another will be done---waiting for a call. The prescription for it actually says "persistent pain despite cortisone x3. R/O rotator cuff tear." Hopefully there isn't a rotator cuff tear----that was the reason given for my 1st shoulder MRI so I shouldn't be surprised to see those words again. We also discussed that there is some syndrome or disorder (can't recall the name) that causes multiple tendon issues, but she doubts that's the problem since I have known looser joints making repetitive injuries easier. She also mentioned (we discussed a lot) that Supartz has now been approved for shoulders. which might be an option, along with some more PT. I go back on June 16, which is when I had my original appointment scheduled for to get the results of the MRI and if my other shoulder is bothering me then (it isn't nearly as bad as the right shoulder), maybe I'd get a shot in it then.

Arthritic shoulders are really bothering me so I called the rheumy office because there is no way I can wait until mid-June for the already-made appointment. Lucky for me I have an appointment for tomorrow morning. I can barely reach behind me without pain and could barely pick up a large bottle of dishwashing soap this morning. Feet are feeling better, although slightly worse than they were before I had to work 3 days in a row this past weekend. Don't know what will happen working 4 days in a row, from Thursday-Sunday later this week but I guess I'll manage.

Saturday May 16, 2009: A diagnosis!

Despite the anterior tibial tendon bothering me (he says it's irritatated), I actually have posterior tibial tendonitis. I am to ice the area once a day until I see him next and he gave me an additional pair of orthotics to use for additional arch support with the pair he liked the other day. They apparently will move the stress from the tendon. He said (and I only saw after he said so) I have swelling below the medial side of my ankle and some thickening in there. I need to research but at least I know what it is. I go back in 5 weeks, and if there is no improvement, he'll give me a shot of cortisone which can possibly cause rupturing of the tendon, but that is unlikely. Hopefully things will not come to that. I do have to go out today and get some different socks because my shoes, with 2 orthotics in them, won't fit with the regular socks I wear and I can't count on it being nice out so I can just wear my little quarter socks.

The right ankle MRI this morning at 9:30. It was done in the extremity machine (Orthone) in the morning. My leg was killing me by the end of it---actually not my leg, my ankle and my foot was ready to fall asleep as well. I wasn’t home more than 10 minutes when I got the reminder call for Friday morning’s follow up appointment. So now I'm just waiting for Friday. I wore the Sof Sole orthotics today without a problem but by the end of the day, my feet were sick of my sneakers, so after my shower, I switched over to Crocs, which Dr. Gray said were fine. I have to wear shoes with soles that aren't flexible (or a lot flexible) so they're okay to wear.

Back to see the ortho this morning with all my shoes and orthotics in tow in a Trader Joe's bag. He told me to stop the Voltaren, which I was using sporadically anyway. He is worried about stomach issues (and starting to think about it, I came home from the Chinese restaurant, had the Mobic right away [usually take in the middle of dinner, not at the end], had cake a while later and a while later threw up). He went through all my shoes, saying the Easy Spirit ones didn't have enough of a stiff sole and they aren't a good choice. He really likes my Ryka shoes (as I expected). The CRocs are fine (just keeping an eye on the ankle) as are the sandals for pronating feet. He also went through all my orthtics and said a pair I got in the brand (Soft Sole) recommended way back in October by a doctor (a knee patient) on my knee board, probably were the ones I should be using. So I came home and switched out my old orthotics for them. I had only used them a couple of times back then (not really rbeaking them in) but he said to try them again. Meanwhile, he is still worried about the tendon thingp---forgot, stupidly, to ask for a shot and he didn't mention it-so to make sure there is nothing else going on in there, I also mentioned the bike issue and he said that might explain things. However, lowering the seat, although possibly good for the ankle, might not be so good for the knee! Can't win! We'll see which body part wins. I've lowered the seat but haven't noticed any difference yet (although I didn't bike alll weekend and Monday as kids were staying in that room). He wants me to have an MRI of my ankle and lucky for me, Northeast Radiology called this afternoon and had an opening tomorrow morning for the Sandpit office where there is the extremity MRI machine. Once that appointment was made, I had to call back CT Family Orthopedics to make an appointment for the follow up on the MRI. That is scheduled for this Friday afternoon so I don't have to wait too long.

I went shopping yesterday with my friend Lenita who is a non-practicing physician. I was telling her about my ankle and anterior tibial tendon issue. She sent me an email this AM with a possible cause of the problem, which sounds good to me. I'll mention it to Dr. Gray next week at my appointment. She quoted an article.

It seems possible that you are not using cycling shoes , the kind that has a rigid sole and prevents you from pedaling wrong and stressing the ankles and the Achilles tendon....also pay attention to the proper length between the seat and the pedals, Please read:The Achilles tendons are the tendons at the back of the ankle, connecting the calf muscle to the heel. If you have pain in these tendons, it usually indicates a problem in pedaling technique. Achilles tendon problems often result from "ankling" during the pedal stroke. This is occasionally related to having the saddle set too high, forcing the cyclist to point the toes excessively to reach the bottom of the pedal swing.It can also be caused by having your cleats set too far forward, or otherwise pedaling with the toes. The farther forward the contact between the foot and the pedal, the greater the stress on the Achilles tendons.There is a widespread belief that you should pedal with the ball of the foot centered over the pedal shaft. I believe this is not necessarily desirable, though it dates back to the high-wheeler era.Back in the high-wheeler era (1870s through early '90s) long legged riders had an advantage, because they could straddle a larger diameter wheel, effectively giving them a higher "gear." By pedaling on the balls of their feet, they could get a bit more leg extension, permitting a given rider to straddle a larger, faster machine. That might explain it since the problem only developed after the surgery. In any event, I'll mention it next week.

I had my ortho appointment with Dr. Gray today for my feet and ankles. Lots of xrays were taken so he could check all the nooks and crannies, bones, etcetera. I do NOT have any signs of arthritis in my feet or ankles.. I don't have flat feet. At the moment, there is no swelling. I do have a bone spur by the arch but he said that is nothing that would be causing the current pains (which are far less because of the nice weather this week compared to last week). He thinks it is a soft tissue issue probably and after I go back in 2 weeks with my existing orthotics and the sandals that I have for pronating feet, he will decide what to do, but he thinks I just need some OTC orthotics for the pronating at this point. He also gave me 2 tubes of Voltaren to try on my feet. I have tried it previously on my (now replaced) right knee and it did nothing but it was probably too far gone by then and not used for long enough to have any impact. He also thinks at least part of the problem might be related to the funny walk I had for months too. He also was very pleased with the good outcome of the PKR and was happy that sending me to get it done was a good decision. WHen I mentioned the other knee getting worse, he said I could get that one replaced eventually too! Hopefully not too soon---he remembers how much surgery I've had in the last 18 months, since he did 2 out of the 3. Dr. Gray also said it could be an alignment problem caused by the funny walking and now the new knee. he checked the tendon and of course, today it isn't sore like it sometimes is. He said it wasn't swollen or hot today but could get a shot of cortisone when it does act up.
So I go back again on May 12.

Today we received a wedding invitation to my cousin's son's wedding in June in a Boston suburb. The groom is the young man who just returned from Iraq. After the wedding, he and his new wife will be moving to FOrt Dix (in New Jersey) for the next couple of years. His mother is very grateful he won't be returning to Iraq at least for those 2 years. The wedding is on a Friday afternoon at 4PM at the bride's family's house. We really didn't want to drive home after the festivities but we really didn't want to spend the money on a hotel room. So fate kicked in! Andy (youngest son), who lives Cambridge/Boston and his GF made reservations tonight to leave for the Azores to visit my sister on the night of the wedding so we're actually going to spend the night at his apartment, sharing the bed with his kitten, which should be fun. They will be up here in a couple of weeks and will give us an extra set of keys to the apartment so we can just let ourselves in. My plan is to use my own Macy's coupon this week and buy a set of nice towels in a neutral color for a wedding present. And since I'm working in dresses on Thursday, I'm going to take a look around. I honestly can't remember when I last bought a dress, except for a cotton tee-shirt dress from LL Bean a few years ago! It should be interesting finding shoes to wear, although I have black heels I can always wear (I'll have other shoes in the car!)

Meanwhile, my sister is going to be making a quilt for my office where I am sitting now. It will be a wall hanging. My assignment is to go to the fabric store and buy the fabric which my son will take with him when he goes to the Azores. So I have to do that in the next couple of weeks, along with getting her some Twizzlers and other goodies for her that he'll stick in his suitcase.

Tomorrow morning is my ortho appointment and I hopefully will come home with some answers. My feet are still hurting but not as much as they were last week when it was pouring out. On a good note, my new knee feels fine and my other knee hasn't been so achy either. I'm guessing it's all the warm, dry weather we've had the last few days. Tomorrow is the last day of warm temps and then it's back to the 60s-no more 80s and low 90s

Friday April 24, 2009: Da Feet

I was supposed to have my ortho appointment today for my feet and ankles, but unfortunately, yesterday afternoon, it was cancelled. He would not be in at the office today. I was given a choice of taking a "if there is a cancellation, we'll call you" appointment for next Thursday but I said that wouldn't work as I have to work. Then she said I could see one of the other orthos Friday (today) in the RIdgefield office, one whom I had never had any contact with. I said no. I was about to ask if Dr. Schweitzer would be available, but suddenly there was an appointment free for next Tuesday afternoon. So I'm going then. Meanwhile, my foot pain has lessened. The more time goes by, the more I am convinced I have foot and ankle arthritis. I was looking at the AAOS site yesterday and found this article with a diagram that shows where foot arthritis develops and those spots are where my feet ache (in addition to other problems, though):

And I think my foot pain has lessened because it's no longer raining and the pain index is no longer at 8. There is more going on in there than possible arthritis (and it is just my guess that's the issue). Hopefully Tuesday I'll get an xray of my feet and see what shows up. Meanwhile there is also that tendon in the front of my leg and my arches are still hurting. I guess I'll update after my Tuesday afternoon appointment, unless something exciting happens between now and then!

Wednesday April 22, 2009: Oh my aching feet!

After having a terrible night's sleep yet again due to my feet and ankles hurting, I got up this morning and told Henry that I thought it was time to see the doctor about it. He said he had been waiting for me to decide this! I wasn't sure if I should see Dr. Schweitzer (replacement doctor) as part of the problem is caused, I'm sure, by the change in my gait since my PKR, or if I should see Dr. Gray, whom I've seen previously about my feet (although I had seen him a whole lot more recently about my knee, last in June 2008), because he's an ankle and foot specialist. I called CFO and ended up getting an appointment with Dr. Gray this coming Friday afternoon. Issues are pain on the bottom of my feet, by the base of my toes on the bottom of my feet (some stiffness), the arches of my feet aching, the heels aching, my ankles aching and feeling like they need to crack frequently, and lastly the anterior tibial tendon issue (which I think is tendonitis) still. That tendon and the ankle cracking are things that started after the PKR, so I think they are related to the gait. I am guessing he'll send me to PT for possibly iontopheresis and ankle strengthening exercises or something. I will not consider any suggestions of surgery!!! No way, after 3 surgeries in 11 months! It;s been nice not having any in 7 months !!
I had been hoping not to have to go to the ortho office again until January when my next appointment with Dr. Schweitzer is scheduled, but that's not going to happen. When I made Friday's appointment, I made sure that it was for a bilateral problem so I don't have to go back to have one foot looked at then after the other foot is looked at Friday. I also want to be sure Dr. Schweitzer gets a report of the appointment.

I meant to write this yesterday but somehow the day passed and I never did! We had a very very busy Saturday. We went to Cambridge to see Andy. Due to parking permit issues, we had to meet him (and his girlfriend) at a T-station down the line from where he lives, where there was also a humongous parking garage. I went up and down stairs like I hadn't in probably a year and a half. We took the T to Somerville and had brunch at Renee's. I had French toast with chocolate sauce and raspberries! Yum! Then we took the T to Brookline to see my old house. where I lived until the end of 3rd grade, in June, 1963, when we then moved to NYC. The brick wall in front of the house wasn't there when we lived there. Andy kept asking me why my parents sold the house and moved to NYC because the house is amazing. We also saw the park across the street from it where I used to climb trees and go to an annual Easter egg hunt. Then we took the T back to Cambridge to his apartment where we met the darling Sasha kitten. Not a great picture (see above) but the only one you can actually see her. Then we walked to Harvard Yard. On the way, Allen called to say if it would be okay to have dinner with Kathy's parents as well as them once we got there. Once at Harvard Yard, I thought about my parents being there, as my mother was class of 1940. Lots of tourists and others around. Then we took the T back to where the car was parked, drove the kids back tio Andy's apartment and left for Easthampton to see Allen and Kathy-this around 3:30ish maybe. We got to Easthampton, met their new cat too (forgot to take a picture) and then went out to dinner at a diner we've been to with them. We met Kathy's parents there too. Nice dinner, although the waitress forgot a lot of things. Then we drove home. Having left the house at 8AM and arriving home at about 8:45PM, it was a long day but a great day. I could never have walked that much a year ago without terrible swelling in my right knee and terrible pain. Thank you, Oxford Partial Knee Replacement! My left knee (unreplaced but with its worsening issues) survived too but was a little achy. Leg muscles -mainly calf-were a bit stiff yesterday but are feeling better today.

I'm not working this week but am working next week, but at the end of the week so it's like having 2 weeks off again, unless I get called in to work unexpectedly. We shall see.

I realized last night that my new knee is actually now beginning to feel normal again, with the few moments of discomfort mostly when I'm trying to get comfortable or trying to sleep and either I turn wrong or I'm putting too much pressure on the Oxford implant area. My right leg no longer feels like it's longer or heavier than my other leg. I had some tightness on the lateral side and that's slowly fading. The hamstrings are rarely tightening up now. Yea! Only took nearly 7 months (although everyone told me it would be a year before I felt completely normal again) after my partial knee replacement, and my ankle is still feeling like it needs to crack frequently. But on the whole, it really feels so much better! Now I just wish my left knee would stop reminding me all's not well there!

Yesterday while I was at work, only straightening tables of tables that were a mess, my left knee, the knee that doesn't have bionic parts, decided to give out not once, but twice. I took some Tylenol while still at work to see if that would help with the pain I had there after the giving out (I had already managed to hit the knee on something earlier). Helped sort of. Once home, showered, and dinnered, I iced it which helped a bit more. Today it still hurts and is slightly swollen, although not nearly as pouffy as the right knee used to get, pre-partial knee replacement. I went to Costco earlier this afternoon and wore my old knee brace which felt weird since I had only worn it on the other knee before! I was happy to take it off once I got home. Consulting with my friends at Knee Geeks, one thinks I am most likely on my way to new parts in that knee. I tend to agree with her but hope it will be a while before that happens. However, if things don't feel better with it, I'll probably end up calling the rheumy office or the ortho office and possibly get a cortisone shot (if I'm lucky). The last MRI of that knee was done in December 2007 and the knee was operated on in February 2008. The operation was a meniscus trim, chondroplasty, and a chondral defect was seen. Dr. Gray told me after the surgery only 1/2 of the medial meniscus is gone and probably even more is gone just by wear and tear.
Ah, the joys of bad knees......not.

I didn't realize it had been 2 weeks since I last made an entry! Things are progressing. I noticed my scar is finally looking less red in the red spots. I worked Sunday and my hamstring behaved very well, although my feet were killing me in the evening.
I am continuing to be busy on Facebook. There are now 19 people in the Oxford Knee group. However, no one says anything (or hasn't in at least a couple of weeks)!
I sold a Le Creuset pan on eBay. What a pain but done. Someday I will get the right amount to charge for shipping. I also have shipped off the Depression Glass, again underestimating shipping costs, but I sucked it up and paid what I needed to pay.
Really pretty boring now as far as the new knee goes. Other knee has been not so wonderful but tolerable still.
I guess that's it for now!

I did a lot of yard work yesterday, raking leaves and vines from the daffodil beds and along the front of the house. Knee held out fine, shoulders today (the next day) minimally sore. Yea ! However, I've been having a weird pain today between the bottom of my knee cap (I believe it's the distal end) and the Osgood-Schlatter bump under it. It comes and goes. Left knee is achy. Might be because the weather has been cloudy all morning and now has finally decided to start raining.

Nothing else new to report, although I still wonder if anyone else is reading this besides me!

After Friday's awful hamstring pain all that afternoon and evening, I went to bed after taking a Flexeril (a muscle relaxant) which finally loosened the muscle(s) that were so tight. Saturday, I worked again but tried wearing my good Ryka walking shoes instead to see if that helped or at least eased any muscle issues that would come up while I worked. It did the trick as far as the hamstring went but my ankle area still hurt. But it was an improvement.
After a suggestion by someone on the Knee Geeks site, yesterday I returned to my 3 times a day post-partial knee replacement exercises that strengthen the quad and stretch the calf and hamstring. So far I've noticed some improvement, but that might be all in my head. I did the exercises again 3 times a day today and will continue to do so until further notice, unless I can't do all of 3 sessions in one day because of something going on (like work), which probably won't be happening any time soon again unless something shows up on the self-serve menu.

Today we've also decided we'll be going up to Boston/Cambridge to see Andy again on April 18.

Ouch. Got me a real hip ache. Not a bursitis ache. A regular old hip ache. Last night it was very uncomfortable. I'm going to bed shortly and may take a Darvocet (or may not). Today I had to call the rheumatology office for a refill on a prescription and they called back to say I was supposed to have gone back in January because it was written in my record. But the PA there had told me to come in on an as needed basis. So whomever I spoke to said she'd ask the PA tomorrow about it. I may end up making an appointment anyway, but I'll see. My new knee celebrated its 6th month anniversary yesterday with a drive to West Hartford and back to meet a new cousin and it was fine. No pain!
So we'll see how tonight goes.

I saw Lenita yesterday, a non-practicing physician, who told me she is sure I had a spinal, after looking at my papers. I had an appointment this morning with the hematologist (platelet count was 91,000) and mentioned the spinal for the PKR and he said it was typical hospital behavior! I also asked if I could make my appointments every 6 months to which he replied he'd compromise and see how 4 months between goes. So I don't have to go back until July instead of June.

I got my operative reports today for my February 2008 meniscus surgery and my partial knee replacement from Sept. 2008. Very interesting. I tried scanning them to make into documents but it didn't work (at least for now). Surprised to see I had a spinal for the PKR considering I told the anesthesiologist before I was knocked out with the sedative that I didn't and shouldn't want one! I'm going to see if I can find a copy of his bill from September and see what it says. If I figure out how to get the papers into Word documents, I'll post them.

With the weather finally nice this weekend, especially yesterday when temps were in the upper 60s, I took a walk around the circle 6 times each day. And what I've discovered is that my new right knee feels perfect while I walk. That alone makes having the partial knee replacement worth it. But what tightens up is my hamstring and my ankle hurts, like it doesn't have much stability. It happened with both walks. My ankle feels like it could crack almost constantly. Not sure what to do, but nothing will work for now.

I listed my Depression glass on Facebook last night and someone tried to scam this morning by offering $3200 in an email asking for my address, cell phone # etcetera, for the $300 price I put on the goods. I've reported it to the FB Marketplace people and hopefully something will happen.

Still waiting for my medical records to arrive. No mail at all yesterday probably because Jonathan parked the black Jeep too near the mail box for the mail truck to pull up close enough. So I am hoping today will be the day.
I am pretty sure I'm not working next week at all. Going to check again later. I am. however, working Friday and Saturday of the following week, having found them on the self-serve stuff of the Macy's site again.
Despite the bash of my knee into the dishwasher door the other day, I didn't get a bruise. Maybe some slight discoloration but definitely not a bruise. I think my platelet count will be lower next week than it's been judging by the number of little bruises I've managed to get. But I could be wrong. A week from today I have an appointment with the hematologist and I guess I'll find out. New knee is still doing well for the most part. Only at night do I get some pain for some reason along the side of the Oxford implant, but nothing terrible. Yea!

Good morning! Nothing very exciting going on knee-wise which is a good thing. I did, however, call Connecticut Family Orthopedics yesterday to request the surgical notes from my PKR and the surgical notes from my February 2008 surgery. I was curious to read what was said in the PKR and with the February surgery, I want to find out where and how big the defect Dr. Gray found in my left knee. I had to send in a form available on CFO's web site which I put in the mail yesterday. I could've faxed it to them but that would've meant going down to Staples and paying for the fax. So it went in the regular mail. They'll probably get it today and if I'm lucky, I'll get the reports by Wednesday of next week at the latest. I was tempted to get all of my medical records but since I've been going there for 7 years, the cost would have been too much, although it probably would've been interesting to read all that and see how all this orthopedic stuff began back in 2002.
I realized Wednesday evening that in the last year I've lost about 9 pounds. I know most of the weight loss is due to the increased level of exercise and I have basically stopped drinking soda. And not having cookies around a lot has helped, although I sure haven't stopped making cakes and having desserts! 1 Pop Tart (hot fudge sundae) for dessert toasted has been working for me lately!
I did start a family group on Facebook for Burkats and Gumners. It took a lot more work than I anticipated but it's been worth it. I haven't included any of my evil post-surgical knee pictures and people should be happy I didn't!

I've found a couple more Facebook knee groups. I joined them and today I removed myself from a couple of them, staying active with the Knee Replacement one although I am virtually the only person who has had a PKR in the group. Everyone else has had a TKR.
Meanwhile. I found a semi-long-lost relative-having had contact a number of years ago through the JewishGen site but then had email issues. But I found her on Facebook! I found out my childhood cross-eyedness was hereditary! She had it too as did her aunt and her grandfather who was the brother of my grandfather! I've also found a bunch of Dalton and Beloit classmates as well as old friends. Pretty wild!
My left hip has been aching while sleeping on my side and occasionally while I've been sitting so I've been trying not to sleep that way which is pretty hard.
So that's about it for now!

Well, I see I have my first ads on the blog. Yesterday I figured out what the pain in front of my leg is: anterior tibial tendonitis. Fortunately, it seems to come and go based on how much walking I do during the day, although that's not always the case. My diagnosis was confirmed by someone on the Knee GEeks board who is a doctor and I thank her for it.

I found a bunch of Facebook groups for knees. Sometimes you forget most people don't have knee issues but apparently enough have them to make groups on Facebook. So far I've found:

I've joined all. There are also a few ITP/blood disorder groups as well which I've also joined:

Now somebody just needs to make a hybrid group of these 2 subjects! I won't but it sounds like an interesting thing to ponder!

Yesterday I got a bill from CFO for my cortisone shot from the end of January. $183.36 after all the charges and credits. Very glad we have an HRA which paid the bill.

Hooray! I looked at where the giant and ugly bruise I got from my cortisone shot almost 3 weeks ago and it's finally almost gone. However, the site of it is discolored and will probably stay that way for a while. If my newish camera weren't having a battery issue for the thousandth time, I would take a picture. I think I can still see discoloration on my thigh from a bruise I got during my PKR which will be 5 months old tomorrow. I can hardly believe it's been that long already! I can't say how much better my knee feels where the arthritis was but I wish the lingering muscle /tendon issues, which are aches and unexpected tightening up of them, would go away once and for all. Today I'm working for the first time in 2 weeks and I hope everything will behave. I have to go in slightly early because I discovered I didn't get a pay check on Friday for that last day I worked, back on Feb. 2.
Now I wish it would get warm. I am getting sick of winter. The few days of warmer temps. last week makes me more impatient for Spring. But I should know every year around this time , it feels like Spring will never get here! I'm ready to retire the heavy clothes (including jackets)!

Firstly, happy 25th birthday to Mr. Jonathan!
I was shocked to find this little blog listed in my new Google news alert for partial knee replacement yesterday. I am minimally famous.
Last night I took a Flexeril before bed to see if that would loosen up the hamstring and it may have a little. It's actually only a small portion down by my knee. It's nice to walk without thinking that there is something in my knee making it work better but it's annoying that it's wreaked havoc on my hamstring. And whatever that muscle/tendon or whatever it is that does from the front of the foot up the shin rears its head too occasioanlly, especially when I have to sort of shuffle while walking on ice or snow or both. With spring coming sooner rather than later, hopefully that will finally go away!

Hamstring was killing me all night, still hurting this morning. Pain index is a 9 out of 10 so shoulders and elbows are hurting. The muscle going up my shin was hurting last night too. I think shoveling and chopping ice yesterday while the temperature was warmish (63) didn't help. TOday it's very windy and the sun is coming and going. But my new knee isn't hurting which it would've been in the old days, pre-replacement. And thankfully my left knee isn't hurting, at least for now!

On Jan. 27, after increasing pain over the weekend, I called CFO for an appointment with Dr. Schweitzer which I was lucky enough to get the next day. The bursa located below and medial in my right knee (pes bursa I now know it's called, thanks to my friends at Knee Geeks) was aching-the same one I was having issues with before Dr. Gray sent me to see Dr. Schweitzer to discuss replacement. He gave me a cortisone shot in the area that caused a nasty bruise. But the bursa is generally feeling better than it had been. We aldo discussed numb knee and nerve weirdness which he explained, but I can't explain myself so I won't. He also said I don't have to come back for a year (not in the fall) but a year from now, January 2010 and I already have an appointment for that, with the appointment reminder card stapled to the Dec. 2009 page of our calendar. He said my knee is still doing very well and said the incision will fade to white eventually. The picture there is of the bruise.

Yesterday, Feb. 4, marked the year anniversary of my last arthroscopic surgery on my left torn medial meniscus. I discovered yesterday, by rereading my orthopedic history document that apparently with that surgery, I have only 50% of that meniscus left, which isn't good news. Hopefully what is left in there will last a while.

Meanwhile I am getting ready to sell some pink Depression glass in hopes of making some much needed money! Awaiting an email from the NYPL about the value of the plates of one pattern that the Danbury Library couldn't find. It will take a couple of days to get that information. DPL gave me information on a different pattern and guestimating, I think the total value of everything is about $300. The patterns are Arcadian Pink by Tiffin-Franciscan and Florentine #1 in pink by Hazel Adams (I did get values for the Florentine pattern ). I'm going to first list the stuff on Craig's List because it's free and then try eBay if necessary.

I worked 4 hours this week and I have a feeling I'm not on the schedule for next week. Not surprising news as it's happening to everyone.

Just printed all my old posts on this blog preparing to make a My Knee notebook which will be funny to look at some day.

It has been ages since I posted. The surgery and its aftermath have gone very well. 4 weeks of PT 3 times a week, followed by 4 weeks of PT 2 times a week, then a 2 week break, followed by going back to work the week of Dec. 1. The arthritis pain is gone -hooray- but there is some occasional muscle (hamstring and quads) occasionally and my left knee has its own twinges, worsening, but livable without cortisone shots still.

I stopped taking Celebrex at the end of October when it was $150 for 90 pills. I switched to generic Mobic which I can get at the Stop and Shop pharmacy here for the much more livable price of $9.99 for 90 pills. What a difference! Still have to watch the platelet count and function but still doing fine!

Hard to believe it's almost here. I get nervous when I'm not busy computering, cleaning or doing something else constructive!
The nurse from Danbury Hospital called around 1PM. Big discussion with the nurse who said part of their usual instructions is for the patient to take Celebrex prior to the procedure (at home). However, after much discission, we decided I wouldn't do that but would bring my Celebrex with me. About a minute after the call, the phone rang again and it was the nurse again who said she spoke to the anesthesiologist who said I should NOT take the Celebrex and they'd give me something else.
So that's all for now. No deep last thoughts on the subject because I can't think of any. Plus the large cannoli in the refrigerator is calling my name!

Wed. Sept. 10, 2008:One week to go

So here we sit with 1 week to go. Hard to believe! So here's a quick run down of what's happened since my birthday:
Friday the 5th, I had my pre-op with the ortho. who also gave me a tube of Volaren Gel to see if it helps for pain relief for a short bit before the surgery. As an NSAID gel, I had to stop using it by Tuesday(yesterday) but as it didn't do much of anything, I'm saving it for another day! I also got my PT prescription so I stopped at the PT part and got my appointments. He also gave me a prescription for Phisohex with which I have to wash my knee the night before and the morning of my surgery. I almost fainted when the price was $60 for a large bottle of something I may use 2-3 teaspoons of! I also got, for filling the prescription, a $25 gift card from CVS and got some odds and ends.
SAturday the 6th, I worked 12-6PM. I saw my friend Karen whom I was going to call a few days later to discuss rides to PT. My knees survived. The ride home from work was bad as Tropical Storm Hanna (a former hurricane) was passing through and the puddles were terrible. The storm got worse after I got home so I was glad to get home when I did.
Sunday the 7th, I worked 10:45-2:45. It was almost the longest 4 hours of my life. I could barely move. Not fun!
Monday the 8th, in the morning, a call from the ortho office, they need a new xray of my knee so I have to go in on Tuesday (no appointment necessary). It's also my last day of work. I first stopped at the HR department to say I'd be on leave for at least 1 month and find out I got $10 worth of Macy money:) I worked 1-6 and it wasn't as bad as Sunday but I was still pooped when I got home.
Tuesday the 9th, I went for my xray and the office stank as one of their xray machines had leaked and the whole place smelled like sulphur. Yuck! Our recliner love seat was delivered in the afternoon. Hooray! We also went to Cold Stone Creamery so I could use my birthday free ice cream coupon. Delicious!
WHich brings us to today. No big plans. I need to work on the Neighbor to Neighbor campaign papers so they're done before surgery. If my glasses come in, I'll go get them, but nothing else will be happening! At this time next week, hopefully the surgery will be over and everything will be fine.

It's my birthday too, yea!

And my platelet count was 113,000 at the hematologist! Hooray! I had been told I needed a count of 50,000 without treatment for the surgery but today, he reread a paper that said a count of 70,000 without treatment, which would have been prednisone or WinRho! So the platelet dance did its magic! Yea!

Tomorrow is the ortho. pre-op and I've typed up a list of questions for that~!

Sept. 3, 2008: Big Big Ouchies

My right knee has decided to have a life of its own and has gotten really really bad since I stopped the Celebrex-only 2 days ago! I went to the eye doctor this afternoon after working 5 hours (with an hour at home in between), it was hard to concentrate on the eye test. YEsterday was the pre-op at the primary where the EKG caused difficulties with interference showing up in the tracings. Waiting now to hear from them. TOmorrow brings the hematologist appointment in mid-afternoon as well as my birthday.
Hopefully tomorrow will be better and if I don't hear from Dr. MAki's office, at least I'll be getting the results of a platelet count at the hematology office.

Monday August 25, 2008: Slight change of plan

I got a call in little while ago changing my pre-op with Dr. Schweitzer to the same time, the next day. So instead of having 2 appointments on Sept. 4, which also happens to be my birthday, I have only 1. But meanwhile, I made an eye doctor appointment because I f0und out I could get new glasses as of Sept. 1. So as a result, I now have a doctor's appointment every day but
Monday, which is Labor Day. So here's next week's agenda:

Sunday 8/31: BBQ at friend's
Monday 9/01: Labor Day and I'm off
Tuesday 9/02: Pre op with my primary doctor in Ridgefield in the morning.
Wednesday 9/03: Work 9:30-2:30 in lingerie and have a 4PM appointment with the eye doctor at an eye place in the mall since that's what our insurance covers and I can chose new frames as well, all for $15.
Thursday 9/04: My birthday and an afternoon appointment with the hematologist
Friday 9/05: Pre op with the orthopedist in the morning.
Saturday 9/06: Work 12-6PM in the larger ladies' sizes again (I scheduled this myself--6 hours I'm hoping I won't regret).

Then I have only the week after until my last day on the 13th-or at least the last day I said I'd be available to be scheduled.

And today I stayed home from work. I worked Saturday and Sunday, Sunday in China where I mostly stood around. One of the people worked with had a terrible cough and cold. I was scheduled to be there this morning with her and my knee hurt and I didn't want to be there with her germs so I called out. I don't have to work now until Friday when I'm in children's. Then I said I wasn't available for the whole Labor Day weekend since I wanted to be able to go to Ron's annual Labor Day festivities, although this year, it will be a retirement party for his wife!

Meanwhile I started a new project last week. I've been going through my iTunes in alphabetical order, listening to everything (or pushing the arrow to the end of the song so it counts, lol). I try to listen to 1 letter a day, although I've listened to 2 in one day. Currently I'm in the "I"s. It's currently on "I Go to Extremes" by Billy Joel.

Aug. 11, 2008: Yesterday

Yesterday I forgot to mention that it was the anniversary of the event that precipitated this past year's surgeries---A year ago yesterday, while vacuuming in the bedroom, I tripped on the vacuum cleaner wire and landed on my knees. I felt the right knee cap move, which is not a good feeling. I most likely would've ended up eventually at the point where I am now, needing a PKR, as I was always having swelling in the one spot where I now need the replacement with the accompanying pain, but this injury sped things along.
And tomorrow is my 30th wedding anniversary. Never expected to have bad knees on this date 30 years ago!

Aug. 10, 2008: Nothing New!

Haven't updated in a week as nothing much has happened. Feeling achy because I ran out of Celebrex but have now ordered some and hopefully they will arrive the first half of this coming week. WHen I rodered it, I discovered the copay had gone from $137 (not cheap to begin with) to $150. Thinking after this refill (and there are none left anyway), I may change medications although it works very well. $150 is really expensive!
Last Saturday we went to Massachusetts to see Allen and Kathy and to have a BBQ with Kathy's parents. Unfortunately the weather wasn't so great but it was nice to see every one. And we got Polar Soda that we ordered through Allen and schlepped it home.

We had mice issues this week in the kitchen. I cleaned out everything and put new shelf paper in, but there might still be something there. HATE HATE HATE mice. On a brighter note, I tried a recipe for fish tacos and the limey coleslaw that goes with them was yummy.

I'll be telling work this week (probably will go in on Wednesday as I don't work until Saturday) about the surgery and will tell them my last day of work can be Sept. 13. Then I'll go on leave. Not sure how long I have to be out from work but as much as I'm not thrilled with the job, at least I'll know I have something to go back to (hopefully) when I can.

And I got a call from my friend Maria who has found out she has mild lupus. I'll be meeting her Tuesday morning (my anniversary morning) at Windmill Diner for coffee/tea.

July 30, 2008: The shoulders

I decided yesterday after a shoulder aching 5 hours at work and the last week having shoulder aches, to make an appointment to (hopefully) get a cortisone shot in each of my shoulders so I made an appointment, which is today at 11AM. Knees are achy (so what else is new).

July 27, 2008: To Boston and Back

We drove to Boston yesterday, getting slightly lost because of the incompatability of GPS and the Big Dig, paid $3.50 for the privilege of driving through Logan Airport by accident, but we did get to Andy's place eventually. After checking everything out, we went into central Boston and had a great lunch at Durgin Park, which included Yankee Pot Roast and Indian Pudding. We took the T around town (public transportation) which isn't good for bad knees. But we did go to the Boston Public Library and Symphony Hall but couldn't go in.

July 16, 2008: Part Deux

Got a call from the surgery scheduler. They hadn't gotten the allergy test results so after I spoke to her, I called to get them faxed over there. In the meantime, I now have a surgery date: Wednesday Sept. 17 at 7:30AM. He does surgery at the Health South Surgical CEnter (outpatient stuff) the week of Sept. 7, which is when I wanted it, so I had to go for the week afterwards. I've now scheduled my pre-op with Dr. Maki (changed my annual check up appointment with her into a pre-op appointment) on Sept. 2. On Sept. 4, my birthday, I see Dr. Schweitzer for a pre-op with him at 10AM and see Dr. Abrams the hematologist at 11:30, for a platelet count. Dr. Abrams had wanted to see me a week before the surgery but since he'll be out of the office that week, I had to make it for the week before. He'll do a platelet count and determine if I need any treatment, which I doubt I will, since Dr. Schweitzer said a count of 50000 or more would be fine. And since my count is always higher than that, it shouldn't be a problem. I won't tell work about the surgery until closer to the date.
Feeling nervous and excited at the same time.
